Reports: Yankees voice John Sterling may announce retirement Friday

The New York Yankees’ lead voice, John Sterling, announced a news conference that indicates he’s considering retirement, according to multiple reports.

Sterling told The Athletic of his plan but declined to confirm rumors of his retirement.

The outlet reported that Yankees officials and WFAN employees believe Sterling, 85, has decided to retire due to issues concerning his health.

“We are going to have a press conference to do everything on Friday,” said Sterling, whose next scheduled game to call is also Friday at Yankee Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Should Sterling decide on retirement, he would do so immediately, according to The Athletic, with 37-year-old Justin Shackil and 24-year-old Emmanuel Berbari taking his place.

Sterling has been calling Yankees games since 1989.
