Gonzaga signee Chet Holmgren wins player-of-year honor

Gonzaga signee Chet Holmgren on Wednesday was named the 2020-21 Gatorade National Player of the Year for high school boys basketball.Holmgren, rated as the No. 1 college recruit, averaged 20.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, 4.7 blocked shots and 4.4 assists last season for Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis.The 7-foot Holmgren learned he was the winner when his former high school teammate and former Gonzaga star Jalen Suggs told him during a virtual announcement in front of a gathering of family and friends in Minneapolis.”It’s definitely a huge honor to win such a prestigious award,” Holmgren said.Past winners of the award include Kobe Bryant (1996), LeBron James (2002 and 2003), Bradley Beal (2011), Karl-Anthony Towns (2014) and Jayson Tatum (2016).Holmgren previously won the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award, among other honors.
